The peplum is arguably one of the most feminine styles a woman can wear. This quick and easy tutorial for adding a peplum to an existing top can be easily transferrable to a number of items by following the simple steps.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED |
- A top
- Coordinating thread
- Tape measure
CREATE YOUR PATTERN | In order to create the perfect peplum to fit your chosen top, measure the circumference of the hem. When you have the measurement, divide the number by 6.28 to get the radius. Then take some paper and measure the radius from the corner of the paper and make a mark. Repeat on the other side.
Connect the marks to form a semi-circle. Decide what length you want your peplum to be, and measure that distance from the marks you made previously. Join those to form another semi-circle. Cut out your pattern.
MAKE YOUR PEPLUM | Get together the fabric you wish to create your peplum from and fold it in half, and then half again. Where you have the two folded edges, lay your peplum pattern at the corner, so that your pattern edges line up with the fabric edges.
Pin in place and cut your peplum out. Once cut, unfold your peplum and you will see it now resembles a donut like shape.
Take the smaller circle edge and pin that to the hem of your top. Once pinned, stitch in place with a 1.5cm seam allowance. Neaten raw edge with a zig zag stitch.
Create a hem by turning 0.5cm and then a further 1cm and stitch in place.
HOW TO STYLE | Peplum tops are great for giving shape to any figure while keeping us looking fabulous. Style yours with a pair of skinny jeans and a statement necklace. Dress up or down by simply switching from casual jeans to a tight fitted skirt. This body shaping wardrobe must-have will have you looking and feeling fabulous in no time, and when you can say you made it yourself, well that’s just a bonus!
