Handmade beats shop bought every day of the week in my eyes, that’s why I was very keen on having as many handmade items in Archie’s nursery as possible.
From knitted and crocheted blankets, to cross stitch photo frames and handmade teddies, his whole room is kitted out with handmade items he can treasure forever. And who knows, maybe even pass onto his children when he’s older.
I love the fact that my whole family are creatives. Everyone has their own special talent and they flourish with it. Being creative is something I can’t wait to do with Archie. I’m looking forward to the rainy days we spend painting and making a mess. These are the memories I treasure from my childhood and I want the same for my little boy.
Among many hand knitted and crocheted blankets is this fabulous one my nannie made for Archie. It features a beach scene with turtles heading towards the water. It’s based on a memory of mine from when I was little which makes it even more special.
When my mam was pregnant with me, she was bed bound for a while due to high blood pressure, so she found comfort in making cross stitch pictures to hang in my nursery. I loved the idea that while I was growing inside her, she was busy making things for me. Of course, I wanted to follow in her footsteps, and I thought it was only fitting that I too do some cross stitch for my little one. I chose these four coordinating Peter Rabbit prints and I love the fact that they’re now proudly on display in Archie’s room.
Another favourite of mine in Archie’s nursery is the quilt that my family made for me. It includes a block that some special people in my life made individually including my mam, best friend, nannie, auntie and cousin. It means so much to me that they all created such a beautiful item together, something that Archie will treasure forever.
This frame was made for me at my baby shower. Each person that came wrote a little message to the baby on a balloon, which were then grouped together on the picture. I love the fact it’s hanging in Archie’s room because it reminds me of when I was pregnant and how much I enjoyed feeling him kick.
This star cushion is a little bit of an odd one, but it makes me very happy. It was actually a project that was handmade for one of the magazines at my work and I was given it by the team while I was pregnant. I love the fact that it came from work, the job that I strived hard to get and did. It reminds me of how much I love what I do and that I get to enjoy writing about my passion of crafting on a daily basis.
Even some of Archie’s toys are handmade, like this hare made by my nannie. I love that each individual item has been hand sewn with such love and attention to detail, using off-cut fabrics from the suits my auntie makes.
Do you have any handmade items in your little one’s nursery?
